Spellings update

Thank you to those families that have returned their child's spelling booklets to school.

The children in mine and Mr MacBean's group that have returned their booklets and completed a spelling assessment today (Monday) have had their individual additional spellings to learn added to the back of these booklets.

Every child in mine and Mr MacBean's group that was in school today has also had their individual spelling lists in Ed Shed updated. Children in Mrs Bernard's group are having a longer spelling assessment over three days, and so their words should be added to booklets and Ed shed by the end of the week.

Once your child logs onto Ed Shed they have a menu of assignment options to choose from. These include their personal spelling lists, statutory spellings to learn (ideally) by the end of the year and spellings to learn for the week or fortnight. If possible, regular short practice bursts where your child plays a game in each assignment or plays multiple games in one assignment will help them to securely learn their spellings.

Many children in the class are more motivated using spelling shed to learn their spellings than writing them in booklets. I believe that there is a place for both handwritten spellings and online booklets which is why both is provided. Ultimately though, as long as your child practices their spelling regularly it doesn't matter too much what method they use.

Next Term
Mrs Bernard's group will start learning a new set of words and spelling rules. A new booklet will be sent home at the start of the summer term, until then please practice individual spellings.

Mine and Mr MacBean's group will learn units 12 - 14 next term. Spellings booklets will be retuned over the holidays.  We encourage children to practice their individual and statutory spellings throughout the year but wait until we study each unit in turn, rather than attempt to learn all spellings in one go.

If you have any questions about spellings or any other questions to do with your child'd learning please get in touch.

Kind regards,
Ms Browne

Home learning, next week and beyond.

Hello everyone,

I can't believe we are approaching the last week of the Spring term, the weeks have raced by.

Next week the children will be completing their learning on food and digestion. They have developed a good understanding of the basic functions of digestion.

On Friday the children will work collaboratively to create a model of the digestive system, which they will use to explain how a chocolate egg would be digested.

From Monday the children will be writing a science fiction inspired big write, imagining that their character has shrunk and is going through someone's digestive system.

To help prepare for their big write, this week's home learning is to draw pictures and plan the main events of their story (they have started thinking about their stories in class).
Children should have come home with hard copies of the cartoon based planner sheet, although a link to the document can be accessed here or an image of page 1 is below:

This week's home learning

Home learning sheets and books will come home on Friday with hard copies of the activities below.

Daily / regular practice:
- Time tables
- Reading
- Spellings. Spellings are uploaded on ed shed and spellings folders for Mrs Bernards group. Mr MacBean and Ms Browne's group have an additional spelling sheet with these words to learn (fruit, forward, early, exercise, experiment, experience).
Could children in Ms Browne and Mr MacBean's group bring their spellings booklets back into school for marking and updating (they will be returned at Easter).

This week's project:
1) We would like the children to apply some of the learning they have been doing to answer three maths questions:

2) The children have been learning about  the human digestive system. To reinforce their learning they can choose from the following activities (or do both if they are keen):

a) Read the explanation text on the digestive system. Then complete the explanation text spotter, recording facts, technical language and feature that they spot.

  OR

b) Create a model of the human digestive system using materials that can be found at home (or in the garden or a playing field). Please take a photograph and email these to c.browne@princeofwales.dorset.sch.uk

As ever, if you have any questions, comments or concerns please get in touch with a member of the team.

Kind regards,

Who wants extra home learning?

During last term's parent consultations I discussed with some parents and carers that they might want some extra handwriting home learning.

Please click here to access a google form to record your preference (and whether you might also be interested in receiving other types of extra home learning).

Kind regards,
Ms Browne

Year Four Home Learning - Make a plan of a room, part of your house, or your garden.

How to Read a Floor Plan and Find a Home That's Right for You

Hello Year Four - Home Learning Activity

Make a plan of a room, part of your house, or your garden.

Can you draw your plan to a scale? (This will involve taking some measurements.)

Think careful about what needs to be in your plan, and what does not.

Year Four Class Assembly - Friday 17th May 9.15am

👍  Reminder:

It is our Year Four Class Assembly next Friday 17th March at 9.15am

It'd be great to see you there.

Warm regards,

Y4 Team

Week 2

Congratulations to the children and thank you to the families that went to the DASP singing festival. The children have done a wonderful job performing recently and certainly have some more items to add to their POW passports.

In class the children have started learning about festivals, food and teeth and digestion. In art they have been learning about still life studying the work of Cezanne, in geography they have been studying maps and plans and in maths they are continuing their second unit on multiplication and division.

On Tuesday, the year 4 team were joined by student teacher Miss Carney who will be with us until late June. Miss Carney will be with us for four days a week and the children are enjoying getting to know her and working with her.

On Thursday, the children looked fantastic in their World Book day costumes. Thank you parents and carers for helping to put these together in a special assembly.

On Friday, each class worked with musician Alexander D Great to write a calypso inspired song. Year 4 created a song with the refrain 'Taste it,  don't waste it". At the end of the days classes performed their songs to one another.

Home Learning
Next week, during Monday and Tuesday's literacy the children will be writing an explanation text about teeth.  In preparation for their writing, this week's home learning task is to either complete a purple mash quiz or to create a labelled drawing of human teeth and their functions.

Most children should now have a spelling booklet (apologies for the delay in receiving these for children in mine and Mr MacBeans group).
Mrs Bernard's group have weekly spellings whereas the spellings in the other group have two weeks to learn their spellings. In the booklets there are also spellings from previous spelling tests for the children to learn (I will also update the children's personal ed shed spelling lists shortly).
Children are discouraged from completing spellings ahead of time or from attempting to learn spellings in one go. Spellings are best learnt by doing short regular short bursts of practice.

Upcoming dates
Monday 6th - FIFA Marathon day. Children are welcome to wear their sports kits to school all day in exchange for a donation in aid of Mission Jensen: Duchenne UK.

Friday 17th March - Year 4 class assembly 9.10am.

Friday 17th March - Comic relief Day. Children are invited to wear something red or dress as a superhero.

Monday 20th March - Dr Bike visit

Week of 27th March - POW passports to be handed in to Mr Spracklen.

As ever, if you have any comments, questions or concerns please get in touch.

Kind regards,
The Year 4 team.
