The Poet Laureate

We truly are a very lucky school to have such wonderful opportunities-today was another superb day full of drama, poetry and writing. Mr. Sanders and Mr. Cartwright, students from Plymouth, lead a great day, the children showed just how outstanding they are by freeze framing each stanza of the Poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson " Charge of The Light Brigade " (GCSE level work I'm sure!!!!)  Before they knew what the poem was, they were shown some images - some children even managed to remember back to Year 2 and identified The Crimean War!!!!! We then went on to write letters sent home written by a soldier the day before they went into battle with the learning objective to use emotive language!!!!!!

Brilliant, moving letters!!!!! A super big well done!!!!!!

Please keep practising your song words!!!!!!

Thanks again Mr. Sanders and Mr. Cartwright!!!

"Whatever Next!"

We had a superb day mixing up with Reception for half the day, doing drama based activities inspired by the book "Whatever Next" by Jill Murphy!!!!! We visited the moon, wrote letters from the moon, encountered and created life size aliens, designed a more interesting plant and created sketches based around a new use for baby bears card board box............this included thrones, a shopping trolley, a helicopter, an aeroplane, a supermarket..........and many more creative ideas!!!! ( I always say you are so lucky because you have the best imaginations-we seem to lose them when we become adults!!!)
This afternoon we created a front cover and blurb for a new "whatever Next" story to give to Reception!

Well done! Tomorrow we have another exciting drama day lead by 2 Plymouth Student Teachers!!!! Watch this space for an update on the fun and learning that will take place!!!

There is a display of some of the work produced as a result of our excellent drama day with Mr. Stone and The Iron Man, in the main corridor-pop along and have a look!

Comics!

Today, we finished the gripping story of The Iron Man, which had been left on a cliffhanger - such a brilliant ending - very dramatic!!!!!

The classroom was transformed and we spent the day with a partner in our very own writers workshops - we explored comic writing and creating. With our partner we chose a section of the story that we wanted to tell and set about creating characters and planning/writing our comic strips!!!!!! It was far more tricky than we thought - short pieces of quality text coupled with careful drawings to portray exactly what you wanted of the story!!!!!

(I hope you all locked up your workshops properly and set your security alarms - there are valuable pieces of writing in them!!!!!!!)

Let it Be lyrics

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

And when the broken-hearted people
Living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be
For though they may be parted
There is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Yeah, there will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

Let it be, let it be
Ah, let it be, yeah, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

And when the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine on until tomorrow, let it be
I wake up to the sound of music,
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah, let it be
Oh, there will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

Get learning, sing it in the shower, whilst eating your cornflakes, in the mirror..........

Muddy fun!!!!

What a superb day working at the roundhouse!!!! Daubing, cooking venison stew on the fire, taking the fence down and breaking it up and sowing seeds in the newly ploughed area outside Year 4 (a science experiment we are going to follow!)

The children were amazing, working enthusiastically and resiliently in all that rain!!!! They absolutely loved it working tirelessly showing excellent team work skills. The stew was scrumptious-their next task is washing their clothes for you.......!!!!!!

A big thank you to Mr. Mistry Dyer, Mr. Duncalf and Mrs. Goodwin!!!!! Real troupers!!!!!

Reminder and noodles!!!!

As you know this week is a themed week - Farm to Fork and our more specific "Welcome to Europe" focus. Yesterday, we finished our collaborative learning projects based around Paris, London and Seville and we also explored the art of various impressionists - Monet, Degas..........creating art in the style of one of them (all will be displayed at our French café on Thursday)

We enjoyed a fantastic trip to Wagamammas today learning about Japanese history, art, food and geography. The children each got to select their own combination of fruits to juice as well as each eating a noodle based meal!!!!!

A reminder about Thursday - home clothes in red, white, blue and as French as you like! Please come and join us from 1:45 in the hall - get practising your French conversational language! (children don't need to bring any money - adults will be buying their food and drinks! - you can visit the Bureau de Change in the hall if you need to exchange your pounds for euros!!!!)

Don't forget old WARM play clothes to wear in to school on Friday (with a change of clothes in a bag if they get wet/muddy + a change of foot wear)!!!!!!

Apologies to Year 4

I know Year 4 had a great time today at Wagamamma's but we also know the visit clashed with our "Love Your Bike!" assembly. If your child took the trouble to decorate their bike and then was disappointed not to show it off in assembly, we do apologise!

Farming in Silvepura

This afternoon, Mr Farrington worked with the Year 4 class during Farm to Fork Week. The children worked on preparing a powerpoint or word document including pictures, focusing upon similarities and differences in farming in the UK and in South India. The children were fascinated by the fact that farmers in Silvepura (the village visited by Mr Farrington in 2008 and 2012) can grow vegetables all the round, that they still use bullocks to plough single furrows in their fields and they grow a cereal crop called "Ragi", a type of millet, which forms part of their staple diet. See what the children can tell you about these photos!

Thursday 5 February 2015

This is a story all about how...........

Firstly, just to clarify, we are going to Wagamammas on TUESDAY 10th and will be back in time for lunch! (just a mis-print!), so swimming as usual on Wednesday. Secondly, Mr. Farrington blogged about next Friday - the children will be working on a rota basis for that day: 2 lessons inside with Miss.Howard and Miss.Pearce, and 2 activities outside at the Roundhouse - I suggest they wear their "old" play clothes, for the mucky outside work, to school with a change of clothes incase it's needed - a change of footwear essential for when they come back inside!!!!

This week we have been reinforcing our work about speech marks and time connectives. We also became international rap artists in the style of Will Smith "The fresh Prince", composing raps themed on Romeo and Juliet following Will's structure! Can they tell you what a quatrain is? What is a rhyming couplet? Can they tell you any similarities or differences between a sonnet and this rap?

We have chunked and chunked and chunked!!!!! (Home learning to come tomorrow) we will also be doing some maths tomorrow continuing from science today!

Don't forget to think about your French outfits for next Thursday! Rouge, bleu et blanc!

Also, keep practising your song words for the Year 4 DASP music concert ( coming up after half term! )

Please can you ensure your child does not run on the raised beds, outside of year 4, in the morning before school - we will be planting in them soon and need to look after them! Thank you!

Mrs. Johnson and the Year 4 Team.

Wednesday 4 February 2015

Repairs and maintenance in the roundhouse area!

Friday 13th February: Year 4 shall be busy repairing a broken fence, daubing the walls of the Viking longhouse and sowing wheat, barley and peas. We might be able to do some outdoor cooking as well!

Old playclothes and wellies are essential for this day please!

If any parents are happy to help, you will be very welcome as long as you don't mind getting really dirty!!!
