This week, next week and homelearning

Hello everyone,

We've had a busy and exciting first week of the Summer term.

This week

On Monday, the children enjoyed our special rocket day and created some fantastic inventions and watched the rocket launch.

On Tuesday, we discussed how to use search engines such as google or ecosia to research information for our Virginia schools project.  It was also wonderful to see the children developing their tennis skills on the field in the spring sunshine.

On Wednesday, the children were very excited to be back in the swimming pool at 1610.

On Thursday, we started our new science topic, sound. The children enjoyed getting the chance to experience sound by feeling and observing vibrations.

Today, the children continued honing their research skills before our google meeting with the children at our partner school in Fairfax Station. The google meeting went really well and the children were fascinated to learn more about each other's lives and to see the photographs they found to show each other.

Home Learning (click here for the home learning sheet)

This week the children are encouraged to practice:
- reading, 15 minutes a day.
- 5 minutes handwriting a day. (Children have had a handwriting booklet sent home with them).
- 10 minutes times tables a day. (We will be focusing on 7s and 9s next week).

The children are also encouraged to choose one of the following mini projects:
1) Use a search engine to find 3 facts about the Romans in Dorchester.
2) Design an experiment (you don't actually have to do it) to test whether sounds travel faster or more effectively in gas, liquids or solids.

Next week
  • PE kits for Tuesday and Swimming Kits for Wednesday please.
  • Home learning books returned on Thursday please.
  • On Thursday we will be going on a walking tour of Dorchester with archeologist Steve Wallis (apologies there was a mistake in the summer school letter).
  • Parent Information Session on Friday at 9am.

As ever, please let me know if you have any questions, comments or concerns.

Kind regards,

Ms Browne, Ms Williams, Mrs Thomas, Mrs Rogers, Mrs Long and Mrs Burgess

Young Artists Royal Academy Summer Exhibition - Last Call for Submissions

You may remember back in March, our last Lockdown #InspiredToLearn Challenge was all about Art!  If you did want to get involved I will need to submit your work before Monday 26th April.  Please email a jpeg of your artwork with a description by Friday 23rd April to be included.

Here is the information just in case you missed it!

 A #InspiredToLearn Artistic Opportunity

Now in its third year, the Young Artists’ Summer Show is a free, open submission exhibition for students aged 5 - 19 studying in the UK and British schools overseas. Artworks are judged by artists and arts professionals with selected artworks displayed online and on-site at the Royal Academy of Arts.

We just had to get involved!

Have a look at last year’s exhibition to get #InspiredToLearn:

https://youngartists.royalacademy.org.uk/exhibitions/2020

What is The Royal Academy Young Artists Summer Show?

Artists are at the heart of everything at the Royal Academy of Arts – they’ve been championing them since 1768 and firmly believe in nurturing young talent and celebrating the next generation of artists.

Taking inspiration from the annual Summer Exhibition, the Young Artists’ Summer Show is an opportunity for young artists aged 5 - 19 years to exhibit their work online and on-site at the Royal Academy.

The project is generously supported by Robin Hambro, a passionate advocate for the importance of access to art, and the benefits of encouraging the arts, for children and young people.

A panel of passionate and award-winning artists and arts professionals work together each year to select artworks to exhibit online and on-site at the Royal Academy.

Your artwork could be among those the judges select this year!

How do I enter?

We are registered as a school and you can submit up to 3 pieces of artwork, these can be works of art created at home or in school, in the past or something you are working on currently.  They can also be collaborative pieces that have been created by you with support of a group of other children.  There is no set theme or media for your artwork - It can be a painting, sculpture, photograph, installation, video, drawing, or a combination.

For each artwork submission you will need a jpeg image/s of the artwork along with details including a title, medium and a short description, child’s name and age.  Please see the attached guide for taking your photos.

Send your photos to a.johnson@princeofwales.dorset.sch.uk

Please also complete the attached permission form and hand in to the school office.  Your picture will then be submitted by us and you will receive confirmation via a return email from us and everyone who submits work will hear from the Royal Academy by the end of May.

The closing date for submissions is 26th April 2021

The full terms and conditions are available on the Royal Academy Website.

What happens next?

Your artwork will be seen by a panel of judges and the selected pieces will be shown in our online exhibition. Some of the artworks will also be selected to be shown at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.

Prizes

Prizes are awarded each year for two inspiring artworks from each key stage, as chosen by the President of the Royal Academy, and you can also vote for your favourite artwork in The Royal Academy’s annual People’s Choice Award.

Are you ready to be...

Pencil cases, school places, big pedal and making a splash

Hello everyone,

I hope you are enjoying the lovely Spring weather and are managing to get out and about (any Dorset photos and Google forms gratefully accepted to be used in next week's learning).

Just a few notices about next term:

Pencil Cases

All children can bring their own pencil cases, writing pencils and other stationary from next term. At POW we will always supply everything your child needs to complete their learning at school but this is a rite of passage that many children do enjoy in preparation for middle school.

The Big Pedal

The Big pedal starts next Monday (19th April) and we encourage children to come to school by bike or scooter if they can during this fortnight (and beyond). To prepare for the event Sustrans have provided us with some safety check videos to help you and your child get their bikes or scooters ready.

Middle school places on Friday

You should have received an email from Dorchester school admissions reminding you that Middle school places will be available from 9.30am on Friday 16th April. On this day the outcome should be available on the parent's portal and you should also receive two emails. One email that informs you of the outcome and a second which gives you a link to download your letter offer. If you didn't provide an email address you should receive these letters in the mail.
If you have forgotten or need to change your portal password follow this link. Click on existing users, enter your email address and then select reset password.
Middle school places are allocated by Dorset Council but should you need any help, advice or assistance the POW team will support you as much as we can.

Making a splash

Swimming will recommence next Wednesday (21st April).  Please look out for a swimming permission letter from Mr Edmonds on Monday. I will need signed permission letters back by Wednesday morning otherwise I will not be able to take your child swimming.  You may also want to check the sizing of your child's swimming gear (I still need to do this myself) as your child may have outgrown theirs since last year.

Please get labelling

Please remember to label all items that your child brings into school. This is especially important as new equipment may be coming in such as pencil cases and swimming gear and because as the weather warms up jumpers are often taken off and forgotten. Putting a name label on your child's belongings means we have a better chance of helping them find their way back to you.

As ever, please get in touch if you have any questions, comments or concerns.

Kind regards,

Ms Browne

Dorset life photo request

Hello everyone,

I hope you had a lovely Easter weekend and are enjoying the brighter Spring days.

If you are getting out and about, I just wanted to remind you to take some photographs of Dorset for us to share with our new friends in Virginia as part of our Global Classrooms Project.

The beautiful photo above was from Evie Pile and photos of the countryside, towns, roads and homes will help children of Fairview Elementary school, Virginia to get an idea of what life is like in Dorset.

Please email me any photographs (c.browne@princeofwales.dorset.sch.uk )  or have a go uploading them onto the Google forms link created for this purpose. The results from the Google forms document will also be used to show the children how to use spreadsheets on the Tuesday once we return.

Enjoy the rest of the Easter holidays.

Kind Regards,

Ms Browne

Happy Easter (and home learning update)

Happy Easter everyone,

I can't believe it is the holidays already. We have had such a lovely few weeks with year 4 and they have really impressed us with their attitude to their learning and how well they have settled back to the routines of school.

Home Learning

This Easter the children's Home Learning is to continue reading everyday and practicing their timetables. I have also asked them take photos and collect information about Dorset that we can share with a our new partner school in Virginia, USA. I have created a google form for the children to have a go at completing which you can access here.  However, please also feel free to email me if you find this easier c.browne@princeofwales.dorset.sch.uk

Swimming

Swimming will start up again on the first Wednesday after Easter. I have verbally suggested to the children that they may need to check their swimming clothes over the holidays as there have been some growth spurts since the last time we went swimming in year 3. For more details please look at the Swimming letter

I hope you all have a lovely Easter.

Lots of love,

Ms Browne and the Year 4 team. xx
