Goodbye Year 4!!

Well, we cannot believe this is the end of the summer term already for us in our time in Year 4!? The momentum certainly picked up towards the end of the term with trips galore, pupils representing the school at events like swimming, sleepovers, the list goes on! Once again, thank you for being patient and tolerant with such a busy schedule at times!
We would like to pay tribute to the Year 4 class. We have simply marveled at how much they are tolerant of each others differences, how kind they are to each other, how resilient they are and how clever and inquisitive they are too! They are a very special class, we will miss them terribly at POW but with this is the next exciting step on their educational journey.
It has been an absolute pleasure to have spent the term with Year 4 and we wish them all the very best with their move onto Middle school. Luckily being part of DASP we hear and meet our past students a lot, this is another 'perk' of the job, seeing these children growing and developing into unique individuals.
Rowan Seymour (DMS) and Helen Pegram (St Os) will be based at middle term for the first term to help children settle so please make contact with them about anything at all, they are there to help with whatever pops up.
If this is your last child at POW then we wish you a fond farewell and thank you for being part of the POW community. We wish you all happy 'sunny' summer holidays, and once again....

Thank you!

Protocol for last day.....

We thought it was best to blog this information, some of you that have had children in Year 4 will probably recall what is the remit of the day, but if not then hopefully this blog will explain?...

The Leavers assembly begins at 10.10am - normally at least 1hr in length, the children have been asked to wear farming clothes for this performance.
Once the performance is done, the children will have their Leavers book, at the back it has autograph pages for the children to collect signatures and messages from staff and friends. We also allow the children to have an item signed which they generally wear like a t-shirt.
You may want to let your child wear an older top to school, once the assembly is completed they'll then get changed ready to go and collect signatures. If they wish to bring in a pen that that would be a good idea! If your child does ask this question.... no writing on the body itself!

Thank you!    Mrs Mewett

Quick Note

Hello everyone,

Just a quick reminder about bringing in some 'farm' related clothes (A checked shirt, overalls, dungarees) that can be used in the leavers assembly on Tuesday 23rd July! Feel free to bring the clothes in tomorrow (Monday) and we will store them so that they are ready.

The rest of the leavers service will be a surprise...

Thank you for your continued support.

Maiden Castle Farm...

Year 4 travelled one last time up to Maiden Castle Farm on Friday and as it was their 15th visit we decided to do something a little different! The children were asked to bring in bits and pieces to help them create a costume for a scarecrow! I am pleased to say that all of the scarecrows look fantastic! We also had a visit from the Dorset Echo so hopefully we should see some pictures soon! We'll try and let you know when it does arrive in there so you can buy it if you wish!
We had very good fun making the scarecrows before having the opportunity to have a snack and a play on the farm!
A massive thank you to Maiden Castle Farm and the opportunities that they have provided to children in year 4 since they started in reception! We all hope that the children at the Prince of Wales will continue to enjoy these trips for years to come!

Radipole art work

In the spring term Year 4 helped the Wildlife Club to create some art work that is now on display at Radipole nature reserve. This can be found in the shelter overlooking the lake at the far end of the reserve. It would be a lovely summer holiday trip to go and see the children's work and enjoy a day out at a beautiful place.

Fantastic swimming performance!

I would like to share with you some further details about the performance of one boy and four girls at the Dorset Swimming Gala recently.
Sebastian has become the first swimmer from our school to become County Champion, winning the freestyle race in a superb time of 18.31 seconds, an improvement by nearly a second on his swim in the west Dorset gala. Our team of girls (Jess, Lucy, Poppy-Jo and Vivien) represented West Dorset in both relays and improved their times from 1 min 40.90 seconds to 1 min 33.69 seconds in the freestyle relay and from 1 min 51.6 seconds to 1 min 45.82 seconds in the mixed styles relay.
Today we put all of the Year 4 children to a stamina and endurance test and their response was fantastic. I told them that they are without doubt the best Year 4 swimmers we have ever taught in all the years I have been teaching swimming at this school!

A few things...

Hello everyone!

We've noticed a few problems regarding the leavers assembly and video so hopefully I can clear up a few of them!
Year 4 are going to be performing their leavers assembly next Tuesday (23rd July) at 10.10am,  within that assembly there will be a video that year 4 and others will have created. It is based on 'The Voice' and all the children in the class have got a performance or a role to play that they have been practicing over the past week or so. We are going to be filming the video to be used in the assembly over the next few days so we would ask if the children could bring in their costumes for their groups performance tomorrow if they have not already done so. The children know what it is their group is doing.
The theme for the actual leavers assembly is based around a farm, so we are going to be asking children to bring in costumes/accessories that relate to farmers etc next Monday (22nd July).

With regards to the trip this Friday, all the children need to bring in are some clothes/accessories to dress their scarecrow in the theme they have been given. We have also had an offer from a parent to take some bits up to the farm so we don't have to carry everything!

Sorry for any confusion but I hope that this helps make things a little clearer. If you do have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask one of the year 4 team.

Swimming success

Today, five members of year four took part in the Dorset Games swimming gala. There was fantastic support with parents, grandparents and friends all cheering on West Dorset and especially the POW swimmers! The swimmers did incredibly well competing excellently and showing great sportsmanship by clapping, cheering and hand shaking other rival competitors. West Dorset came 7/8 in the competition but POW did come away with a County Champion in the 25m Freestyle.

A great and very enjoyable afternoon! Well done swimmers!

Enjoy the weekend - perhaps go for a swim in the sea or a paddle in the water meadows (23 ducklings spotted this afternoon- can you see any more?)

Good luck!

Henry Lings

Year 4 had a brilliant trip to the printers Henry Lings yesterday. Half of the class went at a time to see their leavers book being made and the process that lies behind it. There was also a brief history of printing included. We all learnt something, including the teachers; quiz your children on the three types of printing that we looked at whilst we were there...
A massive thank you to the staff at Henry Lings, firstly for their invitation (definitely a trip that should take place every year) and secondly for their hospitality. We all had a great time!
We hope you enjoy some of the pictures taken yesterday that are above.

Apologies!

Hello everyone,

We would just like to apologise for the confusion this morning (Thursday 11th) surrounding the trip to Henry Ling's - a mix up with parent help and lunch arrangements. We have hopefully sorted all of this now! We have reached that stage of the year when there are lots of different activities happening and are grateful for your continued support!

Another note; the year 4 trip to Maiden Castle Farm is next Friday 19th July - there should be a letter coming home today to confirm. We apologise again for the confusion.

Sun Safety Competition!

  Hello all!

All the children have had/will soon be having a session that concerns sun safety and how you can enjoy the sun AND be safe! The Prince of Wales is very keen to highlight how children can remain safe in the sun.

With this in mind, POWSA have set up a sun safety competition for the children at the Prince of Wales school! They would like you to create a poster that publicises how important sun safety is; what are the potential risks with staying out in the sun? How can we protect ourselves from the effects of the sun?
There will be a prize for the winner of the competition.

Good luck!

Sports Morning...

Year 4 have been incredibly active today as they took to the playground and field for a series of activities. We began by doing some skills on the playground like hockey, netball, tennis and throwing, before every child had the opportunity to take part in a set of races. All the children should be incredibly proud of their efforts today in the sweltering heat! They all acted responsibly and maturely throughout the morning.
Thank you to all the parents for the support they showed this morning - much appreciated.

Whilst on the topic of being outside, I thought it would be worth mentioning that we encourage children to drink water throughout the day so please carry on sending children in with full bottles of water. They are able to fill them up as the day goes on.

Saturday 6 July 2013

Vikings galore!

The Ancient Technology Centre at Cranborne is running a Viking Weekend on Saturday and Sunday 27th and 28th July. Here is a chance for the whole family to enjoy a hands on experience whilst learning about Viking Life! There will be crafts, games and the chance to see Viking warriors in action and maybe the opportunity to try your skills on the battlefield. Check out the leaflet coming home soon.

Summer Reading challenge

Librarians from Dorset County library have challenged all the children to join in the Creepy House Summer Reading journey. Check out Dorchester County library or www.creepy-house.org.uk  for more details.
It would be great if every single child at The Prince of Wales School spent some of their summer holidays enjoying some great books. i look forward to giving out lots of badges and certificates in September!

Help for trips!

A plea for anyone who can help with walking our children to the Museum on Monday, or meeting us at end of day to help walk children back to school?
Also, we are walking to Henry Lings printers on Thursday, if anyone is available to help at all then please let the Yr 4 know.

Thank you!

Roman Day Pictures!

As previously said, here are some pictures from year 4's Roman Day!

Monday 1 July 2013

Togas, chariots and feasting...

It can only be one thing...

Year 4 have today had their much awaited Roman Day! We've all done a variety of activities:

  1. We broke up into groups for the morning and had a go at cooking (pizza making), making brooches, fact finding and working out our birth dates in Roman numerals!
  2. We then collaborated all of the food the children had brought in, along with the pizzas they had made, to create a grand feast for lunch. Amazingly, most of the food went. Hungry Romans!
  3. In the afternoon we firstly utilised the fantastic Roman chariot that the children have been making for the last couple of weeks - A massive thank you has to go to Mr. Duncalf for his input on this - to re-enact some Roman battle tactics and formations in the context of some fun games.
  4. The children all had a go at acting out some of their Roman plays that they have been practicing for the last couple of weeks!
Unfortunately though we then ran out of time! All the children took part in all elements of the day and were sensible and responsible for the whole day - Well done everyone!
Thank you parents for your input regarding the making/creating of costumes - some very nice outfits - I'll be dreaming of safety pins this evening!

Hopefully some pictures to follow!
