The Standing Stone

After a massive effort the first of our standing stones is now in place in the round house area.  Despite the weather the school came together to celebrate the stone's planting!  Horns sounded and everyone cheered as we finally made it stand despite the muddy and slippery conditions!  Thank you to Anthony and his team from Cranborne Ancient Technology Centre for all their efforts over the week.  The children were then entertained by wonderful dance and drama in the school hall supported by Kate and Corwen, a fitting way to celebrate a weeks hard work!

A couple of trips!

We will be marking the end of the Spring term with two trips this week.  On Monday we will be going to DMS to see their Drama Club production, the children need to bring a coat, drink and snack for this one and we will be back before lunch time.  On Thursday we are off to Durleston to further our understanding of National Heritage Sites in the UK.  This will mark the end of our mini-project on Wonders of the World.  The children will need to wear good walking shoes, play trousers, uniform top and a warm, waterproof coat as well as bringing a packed lunch and drink in a bag that they can carry.  We are very much looking forward to the activities involved in this trip, let's hope the weather is kind!

A fond farewell to brass lessons

It is our last session with Mr Penfold this week.  After our class assembly the children will be asked to say goodbye to their instrument and a big thank you to Mr Penfold.  It is amazing how well all the children are playing after such a short time as you will see in our assembly tomorrow.  Please come along for 9:20am to see for yourself what talented musicians we have in year 4.

Request from Year 2

Hi from Year 2!

As we are really getting excited about reading we have been talking about creating an exciting, inspiring and cosy reading area in our classroom. One of the things we would like in it, is our own class library! We wondered if you had any books that you no longer read, maybe have grown out of, and that would be appropriate for Year 2 readers that you would be allowed to donate to us? We love all sorts of books from picture books to short novels, we also love non fiction books and comics too!

If you can help then we would really appreciate any book donations, so please drop any in to us in Year 2............

Thank you very much!

Mrs. Johnson and Year 2

Visit to St Mary's

Year 4 visited St Mary's Church this afternoon. We looked at the stations of the cross, did a photo orienteering exercise and compared the main features of the church with St George's and St Peter's. We ate a hot cross bun sitting on the grass outside. Then we presented our decorated palm crosses and our art work designing hassocks and stained glass windows.  The curate will be displaying these somewhere in the church.

This week in Orchestra...

Those instrumentalists I need this week for Orchestra are Violinists, Ukelele players and Guitarists. If your child was selected by their music teacher they would have received a letter from me inviting them to attend. Children need to come to the school hall for 3.30pm, bring a snack and drink, and then we’ll rehearse. Finish time is 4.15pm; please come around the back of the hall for pick-ups.

Class Assembly

Please don't forget to come along to see what we have been up to in year 4 this term!  Our assembly is on Friday 22nd March at 9:20am in the hall.

Stone Age Drama

Year 4 really enjoyed their Dance, Music and Drama workshop this afternoon with Kate and Corwen.  To celebrate the positioning of the new standing stone the children will be performing their drama along with the rest of the school in order to tell a story of a stone age hero.

Rolling Stones

We had a great morning starting our standing stone out on it's journey from the top of Thomas Hardye field.  The class worked as a team to lift the stone up using levers, move rollers and pull the stone using ropes.  Eventually the stone will be placed in the roundhouse area.  Photo to follow!

Super Football Effort

Well done to the children who played in wind, rain and hail on Wednesday!  You showed great teamwork and real determination!  We are very proud of your performance in representing the school in this tournament!

Missing uniform

Please could you check for additional t-shirts that may have come home with football kits or PE kits this week.  Many thanks.

Headlice

We still have a problem with head lice in year 4.  Please check your child's hair regularly.  I have also spoken to the children themselves about the problem and suggested that long hair should be tied back where possible and that all the children should avoid getting their heads too close together!  Please also act promptly if your child appears to have them and repeat treatment as indicated.

Home learning 15th March

Home learning - Year 4 – 15th March 2013

Next week is our ancient history week.  We will be taking part in lots of activities relating to the Ancient History of our area.  I would like the children to have a go at designing their own chalk hill figure or standing stone circle for home learning.  They could draw, describe, use ICT, model, etc.  Later in the week we will actually be involved in making a new chalk hill figure in the school grounds and placing a standing stone into the roundhouse area amongst many other exciting activities.

We will also be concentrating on the 3 and 4 times tables as we need to brush up on our speed here!

Please have a look at a selection of the children’s shoes and shoe designs that they made for home learning a couple of weeks ago, they are underneath our Tempest display in the area in front of the hall.  Look out for a picture on the blog!

Easter story

In RE this week half of Year 4 made and decorated a palm cross, whilst the other half looked at images telling the Easter Story and designed a picture and text to fill in the missing parts of the story. We all talked about the importance of Easter to Christians and the symbols we use to represent new life. Next week we shall be visiting St Mary's to look at the stations of the cross and do a photo orienteering activity.

Orienteering 12th March

We have been invited to take part in an Orienteering event at Dorchester Middle School on Tuesday 12th March.  Please ensure your child has a warm waterproof coat to wear over their normal uniform.  Children may wear trainers for this trip.

Home learning 8th March

Look out for some maths work for this week's home learning.  We have been looking at area and it's link to multiplication.  We will be multiplying and dividing larger numbers next week, these activities should give the children plenty of confidence in tackling such calculations.
Also this week we will be learning and revising our 7 and 11 times tables.

Lent

I know we are late, but yesterday Year 4 cooked pancakes as part of our learning about Lent. The children learnt about Carnival, Mardi Gras and Shrove Tuesday. We also completed our designs for hassocks with a Christian symbol. These will be displayed at St Mary's Church after our visit there in a couple of weeks. More details about our visit will follow.

We shall be learning more about Easter over the next few weeks.

Monday Movie Trailers!

Hi there!

Just a reminder to children, and to let you know at home - Year 4 are working on creating and filming a film trailer for The Tempest. In order to make it authentic the children are allowed to bring in named costumes and props, in a named bag, which they have already planned and know exactly what they need to bring in. These items need to be in school by NEXT MONDAY - 11th March. We have been rehearsing but would like to do the real filming on Monday due to a dead line!

Thank you for your co operation,

Mrs. Johnson
