Last day at POW

Hello everyone,

Firstly, thank you for our lovely gifts, cards and kind words. We have loved working with your children and watching them shine and grow.

We can't believe that it our the last day tomorrow.  It has been a truly incredible year and we couldn't be prouder of everything that the children have achieved and how much they have developed.

The forecast for tomorrow is hot and sunny and so in addition to wearing their award ceremony outfits, we strongly suggest that the children wear sun-hats and sunscreen and bring a bottle of water. All children will need a packed lunch and should also bring a snack as normal.

Tomorrow's timetable:
  •   9.45 gates open for parents and carers to find their seats.
  • 10.30  leavers award begins (there will be an interval)
  • 12.30 - 13.30 - Family picnic with year 4 child and any siblings
  • 15.20 - Year 4 get clapped out of school and will be ready to collect at the front of school.

We are so excited to celebrate year 4 tomorrow. It can be an emotional day and whilst we will be sad to say goodbye, we know that the children are ready for their next adventures at middle school.

Thank you for being a part of our school community. We do hope that you and the children will stay in touch.

Lots of love,
Ms Browne, Mrs Hall, Mr MacBean and Mrs Thomas. xxx

End of term activities, rail safety information and home learning

Dear parents and carers,

It was such a shame that we needed to cancel today's sports day which will now be held next Tuesday (weather permitting).

As we were missing our sports morning Ms Evans invited year 4 to come to reception to spend time with their buddies whilst they had a visit from her mother's dog and puppy. Following our puppy time, Mr Treble gave the children a session on the climbing equipment in the hall which they absolutely loved. We had such a lovely morning which seemed to alleviate any sports day disappointment the children had.

Railway safety
We also discussed rail safety today. Earlier in the term the school was made aware of an increase in trespass incidents in Dorset and so we we watched a video from Rail Safe Friendly ahead of the Summer holidays.  The session was written for key stage 2, although some children may have been struck by the content as it shared a case study of a child that was killed by a jolt of electricity when they climbed over a fence onto the railway line area to retrieve a football. The main messages of the session were that children should stay away from train lines because trains are very heavy and that it takes them over a mile to stop and that even with no trains nearby that the electricity in railway lines is always on. The children also learnt about level crossing safety. For more information about railway safety please click here

Homelearning
For this week's home learning the children are being sent a booklet home which gives the children some ideas of activities they may like to try to help them regulate emotions and practice mental health self care. The children do not need to return these to school but I do hope that they find something useful in them.

The children's last spelling test will be on Monday 15th July! Here are the spellings for week 6.

End of term activities
Thursday 11th July - Year 4 last swimming session (all children to be picked up from school)
Friday 12th July - please return all passports today
Friday 12th July - class celebration afternoon (please bring another plastic bag to school)

Monday 15th - Afternoon movie viewing in the hall.
Tuesday 16th - KS2 Sports day morning
Thursday 18th - Board games party day. Children may bring a non electronic game or toy from home.
Friday 19th July - Leavers assembly and last day of term

As ever, if you have any questions or comments, please get in touch with a member of the year 4 team.

Next week

Today was a wonderful end to a big week for year 4.

Thank you to everyone, that made it into school to watch the year 4 samba band - the class absolutely smashed it and should be very proud of themselves.

The children seemed to have a good day at their middle schools yesterday and were full of excited talk about what they got up to. Next week, we will be doing daily additional PSHE lessons that will work on helping the children manage and regulate their emotions.

Sports day and swimming
Next week, we have our sports day on Tuesday morning and a swimming session on Thursday afternoon. Please could children have a PE kit with appropriate footwear for Tuesday morning and swimming kits for Thursday.

Home learning
I have chosen not to set any home learning for the weekend but the children will be given their last spellings to learn on Monday of next week and will be set some mindfulness activities to try out as home learning for next week and for the end of term.

Send in a bag
On Tuesday and Friday of next week, please can you send in a plastic bag so that children can start taking home their exercises books and work booklets gradually rather than have a very heavy load to take in one go. We may also need plastic bags in week 7 also.

Upcoming dates
Saturday 6th July - POWSA Summer fayre
Tuesday 9th July - KS2 sports day (9.15am - 11am)
Thursday 11th July - Year 4 last swimming session

Friday 19th July - Leavers assembly and last day of term

As ever please get in touch if you have any questions.

Kind regards,
The year 4 team.

What is happening on Friday (drums, dancing and speeches)

Leavers speech recordings
The children will be recording their leavers assembly speeches on Friday and so they may want to have another practice of these.  A photocopy of the speeches were sent home a few weeks ago, although those children that reported they had lost their original copies have a replacement being sent home today.
On Friday, the children may also want to bring in their leavers hoodies if they would like to be filmed wearing them.

Dance day and Samba drums performance
This Friday the children will be taught a dance that they will perform at this Friday's dance day. A separate email will follow but parents and carers will be invited to watch the dances from 2.30pm. Year 4 will also perform their Samba drums at the end of the dance day (following their final session with Mr Whitmarsh on Friday morning). I have been very impressed with the children's drumming skills -  they are amazing musicians.

Last swim
Next week, year 4 will be given the opportunity to have a last class swim at on Thursday 11th. Please could all children bring their swimming things (hats, costumes or shorts and goggles) as well as a rain jacket if it looks like rain.
