Year Four - Home Learning
Can you write a poem with a Harvest Theme?
Perhaps you could write an acrostic?
Here’s one of mine:
Hard-working farmers are busy harvesting the crops.
Are you coming to our Harvest celebrations?
Ripening fruit on the trees.
Vegetables are ready to be picked.
Equinox (September 23rd) means longer nights.
Some foods need preserving for winter months.
Truly grateful for the food we eat.
Or maybe a funny (silly) poem like this one…..
Lettuce show our care for one another.
Peas with everyone across the world
Squash unkindness and selfishness
Thyme for family and friends.
Turnip and make a difference by lending a hand.

Junk model musical instruments
Next Tuesday, year 4 will be making junk model musical instruments as part of their science topic on sound.
If you have any junk model materials that you could send in it would be much appreciated. You could either ask your child what they need to make the instrument they have planned or any general donations of cardboard boxes, elastic bands, clean drink bottles or milk bottles would be put to good use.
Thank you in advance,
The year 4 team.

After school pick up location for Year 4
Dear parents and carers,
Please note that Year 4 will be leaving school via the quiet room door from now on.
This will hopefully reduce the crowds of adults and children being collected from the same place after school.
When the weather is very windy, or if we have driving rain we will use the other exit but a sign will be displayed to let you know.
Children should continue to enter school via the same door as they currently use next to their lockers.
Kind regards,
The Year 4 team

Year 4 Update Week 2 (including home learning)
Hello everyone,
Year 4 are continuing to enjoy learning about World War 2 this week with the class going to Nothe Fort over two days and enjoying WW2 drama using headsets and storytelling.
WW2 will continue to be the topic that much of our literacy learning will focus on next week and beyond.
Maths
In maths for the first few weeks of term we will be studying place value. Unit 1 will develop your child's understanding of place value and build their confidence in recognising, understanding and representing numbers up to 10,000.
In unit 2, your child will learn to find 1,000 more or less than a given number. They will use their understanding of place value to compare and order 4-digit numbers to 10,000. They will also round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000.
Home Learning
For this week's home learning the children have been invited to either create a family tree going up to their great grandparents or to research a family member that would have been around during world war 2 and what they would have been doing at this time. For more details click this link.
As ever, if you have any questions comments or concerns please don't hesitate to email myself or Mr MacBean or talk to a member of the year 4 team.
Kind regards,
Ms Browne, Mr MacBean & the Year 4 team

Key Stage 2 (years 3 & 4) spellings
Dear parents and carers,
Depending on the spelling group your child is in, you may find the frequency of spellings sent home may seem less than in previous years.
If your child is in one of the colour named RWI groups or spelling groups 2A or 2B your child will continue to have weekly spellings to learn and a weekly spelling test.
If your child is in spelling groups 3 or 4, they have one spelling test a fortnight. They will be given spellings to learn in the first week and in the second week they will be given an additional spelling activity (whilst still having the remaining week to continue to learn their spellings). As the words become gradually more challenging, the children will be given activities to help them to retain and apply these spellings in their writing.
Year 3 children have had spellings sent home this week (please check book bags), whereas year 4 will have spellings to learn next week, following spellings assessments this week.
Adult support is often very helpful in helping your child learn their spellings. Children can use the Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check spelling sheets that are sent home but any additional practice or games such as hangman or anagrams will help your child.
Below are links to spelling lists for words that children should hopefully have learnt by the end of their time at the Prince of Wales school.
You might find these lists useful should you want to use them. However, please be mindful that children's learning ability develops at different rates, (just like all developmental milestones) so please don't be overly alarmed if your child hasn't retained all the spellings by the suggested ages. Try to achieve regular, low stress spelling practice and activities. Oxford Owl has a link here with some alternative tips to help your child learn their spellings.
If you have any questions please talk to your child's class teacher.
Kind regards,
Ms Browne, Mrs Thorpe and Mr MacBean
The first few days in year 4 (and home learning)
Hello everyone,
We have had a lovely first few days in year 4 and the children are beginning to settle into their new position at the top of the school beautifully.
The class have shown a lot of interest in our new topic, World War 2 and are adjusting to their new roles and responsibilities in year 4.
A highlight so far has been the buddies with Reception. It has been wonderful to watch the class care for their younger buddies and they have had an important role in helping the reception children settle during playtimes and assemblies.
Tomorrow (Thursday) we have swimming. Could all children bring their swimming kit and a rain jacket please?
Please note, the year 4 Parent Information session will be on Monday at 9am and the Nothe Fort trips will be on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
This week we have been looking at historical events and putting them into chronological order. The project home learning project invites children to create their own personal timeline. They have been provided with a timeline template or they are welcome to create their own timelines.
If you have any questions, comments or concerns please talk or email myself (Ms Browne), Mr MacBean or a member of the team.
Kind regards,
Ms Browne, Mr MacBean and the Year 4 team. xx

Welcome to Year 4
Welcome to year 4 everyone,
I hope you and your children have had a happy and enjoyable summer and are looking forward to starting the new school year on Monday.
We are so excited to welcome the new year 4 children, we have so many engaging learning activities and new adventures in store and can't wait to get started.
We will have the Year 4 Parent Information session on Monday 12th September, after morning drop off, when we will detail much of what you need to know for this term. However, here are some reminders and dates that might be useful before then:
- Year 4 will have PE on Mondays and Wednesdays and so it would be very helpful if children could have their PE kits on Monday please.
- Please provide your child with a healthy snack and labelled water bottle daily.
- Please ensure children have a labelled coat or jacket next week as the forecast is changeable but we still like to go outside in light drizzle, for fresh air and physical activity.
- Children need their Swimming kits every Thursday starting this Thursday 😊
- I (Ms Browne) will be teaching year 4 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Mr MacBean will be teaching on Thursdays and Fridays.
- Year 4 will be going on an excursion in the second week of term and will need to dress up as an WW2 evacuee. You should have an email from Mr MacBean detailing this, please check your spam email folders or ask the team or office if you haven't received this.
We hope you enjoy the rest of the weekend and we look forward to welcoming you next week.
If you have any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to talk to a member of the team or email myself c.browne@princeofwales.dorset.sch.uk or Mr MacBean d.macbean@princeofwales.dorset.sch.uk
See you next week,
Ms Browne, Mr MacBean and the Year 4 team. xx
