Reading and Romans

Thanks for think link Lindsay! :-)

FYI:
If you would like to come along to see our Guided Reading lessons next week, then please pop in, we read at 11:50-12:30 every day, you are more than welcome to join in with the adult lead groups, or find out what the independent groups are up to and listen to readers!!!

So far this week we have immersed ourselves, with great excitement, in the Romans! We discussed the fact that, while we will be learning lots of facts, our main learning will be skills (I likened skills to a tool kit for learning).......reasoning, investigating, enquiring, communicating, prioritising and many more. The key question spanning the 6 week project is : Why were The Romans so important that we have to learn about Roman Numerals in Numeracy?

The children instantly began using enquiry skills, generating other questions........How did they go to the toilet? Why were they different to us? Why did they end and who came after them, why? Why were they called The Romans? Why were they so good at battles? Brilliant, broad, deeper thinking questions! And so we have begun a huge mind map, answering these questions and adding more on the quest to prove or disprove the key question!!!!! The children are working in groups to design and produce exciting information books with pop-up pages, lift the flaps, moving mechanisms, tough and feel elements and so on-Great stuff!!!! We have also proved to be excellent at cracking Roman Numerals.........get them to show you, it's lots of fun! We are now in the process of designing a new Roman Town and an Emperor's garden which we have a budget for, a shopping list to choose from and a map to plan!

Pre-warning: in a few weeks time towards the final week we will be having a Roman Day when we will be asking the children to dress up as a Roman for the day!!!! (Start searching for old sheets!!)

See you all soon,

Mrs. Johnson
