Half Term Home Learning

 Happy half term to everyone,

Here are the home learning activities for the holidays. Having spoken to Mrs Ray at DMS, I will endeavour to gently increase the home learning set so that it begins to mirror what they send home at DMS (which I believe will be similar to the other middle schools).

Daily Tasks
  • As ever, I recommend your child finds time to read on a daily basis. You may want to start them recording what they read in their reading journals.
  • Spelling practise for half term is on Ed Shed - spelling shed. There is a task selection which gives all the words children should attempt to learn by the end of this year. If your child is unable to access Ed Shed you can find the full list of spellings here
  • Times tables practise. Daily practise for times tables where possible in preparation for the Multiplication check. Your child can choose Hit the Button if they still have spellings to learn; Times Tables Rockstars if they are building their tables fluency; or a multiplication check website, if they are ready to practise the test conditions. If your child prefers booklets, I sent their booklets home last week. Additional electronic copies can be found here should you want one.

     Longer tasks

  • Arts Award Mission Pack. Whilst the children are working with Mr Whitmarsh, the samba drums teacher, they will be completing an arts award which is accredited by Trinity College, London. Many of the activities will be done with Mr Whitmarsh during their music lessons but they will also have some additional activities. This week, they need to complete section A which involves them finding different art forms and taking part in different art forms. Your child should have come home with their Mission Pack and Log book today but please click on this link for reference, in case they have misplaced it (we can print another copy back at school).
  • Songlines singing practise. Please could your child practise the songs for the Songlines performance. I forgot to send paper copies home but all songs and lyrics can be found by clicking on the Songlines Folder link. Please note that the folder link and some of the contents have been updated slightly.
  • Complete the multiplication wheels. Click link in case they didn't make it home.
  • Complete the expanded noun phrase worksheet. Click link for a copy.

We hope you all have a lovely break and we get some good weather to enjoy.

Kind regards,
Ms Browne & the Year 4 team. xx

Sea life today - Jubilee Celebrations tomorrow.

Year 4 had a wonderful visit to Weymouth Sea life centre today, seeing lots of animals up close and the children got the chance to touch some of them.

Don't forget that tomorrow is the Queen's Jubilee Celebrations in school. Please can you child come into school wearing red, white or blue and to bring a royal Jubilee inspired lunch.

Here are a few photos from today.
Kind regards,
Ms Browne and the Year 4 team. xx

Home Learning, Next week and our park visit.

Hello everyone,

Year 4 had a lovely time this afternoon, visiting the park as a reward for completing their class reward chart. It was lovely to see them playing together in the sunshine.

The class have been working very hard and are already well on their way to completing their next chart which will hopefully be completed by the time we go on our class trip.

Home Learning.
For this week's home learning. I would like the children to regularly read, and practise their times tables and spellings.

In addition to this, please can they also complete the following tasks:
  • Maths worksheet on money (these are stuck in their home learning books if the children have returned them).
  • Create a recruitment poster for a job that people might have 100 years in the future. Your child should complete this on the A4 paper that was sent home today. Click on this link for more information.
  • Start practising the Songlines songs. A letter detailing songlines came home today and the children will have another session with Jeff next week in preparation for the concert in June. Click here for access to the lyrics and recordings of the songs.
Please could home learning books be returned every Friday.

Next week
Next week the children will be completing their big write. They will be writing a persuasive argument about a topic of their choice.
In maths they will be starting their second unit on fractions.   An overview of what they will be learning is below:

On Thursday we will be going on our class trip to complete our topic on our Wonderful World. Hopefully the weather will be fine but please ensure that your child has a rain jacket as the weather has been very unpredictable recently.  If you haven't given consent for the trip please do so online as soon as possible (an email was sent out detailing the trip. If you haven't received it please check your spam and then contact Mr Edmonds). Please note that children should have a packed lunch for the trip on Thursday.

On Friday the school will conduct their Queen's Jubilee celebrations. If possible children should come dressed in red, white and blue and bring in a special packed lunch.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,
Kind regards,
Ms Browne & the year 4 team. xx

Hello everyone,

We have had a lovely week in year 4. We welcomed our Ukrainian student to our class on Tuesday and the children have been wonderfully supportive and kind. It has been lovely watching them having fun and sharing laughter with him.

We have been looking at fractions in maths and continuing to look at our wonderful world and consider why it needs protecting. In PSHE we have been looking at friendships and what makes a healthy relationship. I have shifted PSHE lessons to Friday afternoons. This should give time for you and the children to discuss what we have looked at in class over the weekend. Friday's lesson looked at how we communicate positively with our friends and that just because we are friends with someone, it doesn't mean that we'll always want to do the same things. We discussed how we should try to negotiate with each other and to try to be respectful and kind.

  • There are still a number of children that don't have PE kits in school. PE kits are needed on Mondays and Thursdays please.
  • As the summer weather (finally) warms up please ensure that all school jumpers and cardigans are labelled.  Children should also have a labelled bottle of water daily and we encourage them to wear a sun hat and have sunscreen applied before school.

Home learning
Please continue to encourage your child to read and practise spellings and times tables on a daily base. In addition, this week's home learning activities are:
  • Maths worksheet on fractions.

  • Decorate bunting for Queen’s jubilee (your child should have bunting sheet in their book bags).

  • Create a list of new and interesting jobs people might have in 100 years time (that don’t exist today) these ideas will support a careers competition we will be entering in a few weeks time.

Coming up
- On Monday Miss Easton from DMS will be coming to informally meet the children going to DMS during playtime. Year 4 will have a later break, separate from the rest of the school to accommodate this.
- Bunting decorated by children to be returned to school by Wednesday 18th.
- Class trip to Weymouth on Thursday 26th May. Details to follow soon.
- Friday 27th. School Jubilee celebrations. Children to wear red, white and blue and bring a royal packed lunch.
- Half term is 30th May - 3rd June.
- INSET is on 6th June.
- 7th June - all children return for a busy and exciting summer term 2.

As ever, if you have any questions, comments or concerns please get in touch.

Kind regards,
Ms Browne and the year 4 team. xx

A Royal end to the week

The children enjoyed a very royal end to our week today as Years 3 and 4 were invited to represent the Prince of Wales School at the opening of the new park in Poundbury. HRH The Prince of Wales cut the ribbon and briefly spoke to the children about the slides and park equipment.

The children had a lovely time exploring and playing in the park and we were all very impressed with year 4's excellent behaviour throughout the trip. They were a credit to themselves and POW.

This week in class, we have been continuing to think about our wonderful world and we have started writing a piece of text to convince others to protect our planet. The children have come up with some effective rhetorical questions and are developing their powers of persuasion.

Part of the Home learning for this week is to do some research to support their writing for next week.

Homelearning:

Middle school transition
This week Mrs Pegram from St Osmund's came to meet the children that will be joining them in September.
Mrs Ray from DMS has also contacted me and is keen to start the big task of putting all the future year 5 children into the class groups. Next week, I will be asking the children going to DMS to list 4 or 5 children that they would like to be in the same class with. We cannot guarantee that they will be with all of them but every effort will be made so that they are with at least one of the children on their list.

We hope you have a lovely weekend. As ever, if you have any questions, comments or concerns please get in touch.

Kind regards,
Ms Browne & the Year 4 team
