recycling

Recycling Christmas Cards in the New Year

Please help us recycle your Christmas cards for the Woodland Trust Scheme.
We're asking you to recycle your Christmas cards to help us turn your cards into trees!

For every 1,000 cards dropped in to Marks & Spencer stores for recycling throughout January 2017, a new tree can be planted!

In the New Year, please bring any Christmas cards to the foyer outside the school office where there will be a bin. Do bunch these together and place a slip with the amount you are posting into our bin - this way the children will be able to calculate quickly whether we have collected enough to plant one or two trees. Please do not put loose cards in. The recycling bin will be in the foyer form the start of term. If you can, please do support this worthwhile venture. We will then make arrangements for the cards to be transported to Marks & Spencer at the end of the January 2017.

We wonder how many trees we can donate?!

Year 4 Monday 12th December 2016 - this week and food!

Good evening Everyone!

Many apologies for not blogging recently, there have been a few technical problems - hopefully now though things have been solved!

I am sure you are all looking forward to our Christmas performance - the children are very excited to perform and have been working hard towards it, whilst also suffering with various illnesses, proving how resilient and determined they all are! A HUGE thank you too for all the fantastic costumes, we are very grateful for the superb effort and support you have shown!!!!!

I hope you all received the e-mail about our party on Friday, re the surprise pizza delivery, again, if there are any queries please do come and speak to me! The children are allowed to wear a festive christmas jumper on Friday too and are asked to donate £1 - this is a national charity fundraiser!

Keep going Year 4, you're doing so well - I recommended a quiet evening, eating all their dinner, plenty of water or orange juice followed by an early bedtime (to fight off all the germs!!!!!!!)

See you all tomorrow,

Mrs. Johnson and The Year 4 team.

Christmas performances

It is time once again for our Christmas productions!

Reception, Year 1 and 2 are performing Sleepy Shepherd -10am

Years 3 and 4 are performing Roald Dahl’s Jack and the Beanstalk – 11am

There will be refreshments by POWSA between the shows.

On the day of the performances the front doors will open at 9.40am. Please enter via the School Office entrance.

Technology day (9/12/16)

A ‘Christmassy, art and crafty’ day was enjoyed by all on Friday 9th December. It was the POW school annual ‘Technology day’ when children select three activities in which they wish to create a Christmas themed piece of art/ design work.  The manner in which children moved around the school, worked well within the mixed up age groups was superb. All children were displaying our resilient tortoise in tackling activities and the older children were lending a hand in helping organise the younger children’s work, showing the next steps in how to produce an item. Super skills from one and all! Some products made have been added to this blog.

Thank you finally to all parents who managed to join for some/ or all of the day, the extra pairs of hands very much helped!

Christmas fair, 2nd December

What a busy, Christmassy feel to the school yesterday evening! The school was full of children and our families making the realisation that Christmas is nearly knocking on our doors!

The school would like to thank you for your support, for the goodies donated and for spending those pennies! All which will be ploughed into making the children's learning and environments a richer place to learn in.

A huge thank you also to everyone who has helped in preparing for the Christmas fair, preparations, laying out and running stalls to tidying up at the end. Thank you to POWSA.

Year 4 Tuesday 22nd November - Important Information - please read me! (running clubbers too)

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped us on Friday during our trip to Bovington - I am sure the children didn't stop talking about it all week-end, it was such an enjoyable and informative trip peppered with many poignant moments too, putting all our learning into context relating to all wars fought.

This week we will be finishing our WW2 topic by celebrating during the tea dance on Thursday afternoon - we are very much looking forward to seeing all your baking creations and hope you can join us for a cuppa, a dance and a piece of cake!!!!! (2:30pm onwards in the school hall) WEAR WW2 EVACUEE COSTUME THIS DAY!!!!

In literacy this week we have been embarking on some cross curricular writing linked to RE. We have been learning about the nativity story in detail and are writing it in our own words...............using our linking spider learning skills to include all the literary devices we have been learning about. I can't wait to read them! During numeracy this week we are learning about coordinates: reading them, plotting them, constructing accurate axis and 4 quadrants.

Christmas has also arrived!!!!!!!! The parts for our performance have all been handed out and we cannot wait to start rehearsing. I would like to extend a HUGE thank you, in advance, for your help and support in organising your costume, we are very grateful because, as you can imagine, there are a lot of props to organise as well as directing and supporting the children - and carrying out all the fun, exciting christmas activities in school alongside all this! Thank You!!!!!!

Finally, in running club the children have been asking for a challenge, so this Thursday Mr. Gibson and I are going to run, with the members of the club, to Maiden Castle car park and back. We plan to leave school at 8:00 am sharp in order to be back at school for 8:45 am. Please speak to me about this if you have any questions, if you do not want your child to take part in this run, then please come to school at the normal time in your WW2 outfit.

Thank you for all your continued support, and thank you too for your prompt return of the home school agreement, that was much appreciated!

Last day for Operation Christmas child shoe boxes!

Just a reminder that tomorrow will be the last day that we will be taking the 'Operation Christmas child' shoe boxes at school. Mrs Mewitt has kindly said she would take the shoe boxes that people have bought in to school to the drop off point in Weymouth. So if you have a shoe box please bring them in tomorrow. Also please remember that the shoe boxes need £3 in them to support the transportation fees.

Thank you for supporting this cause

year 4 Sunday 13th November 2016.

First of all, a few well dones.................last Monday were our first awards and it was fantastic to see so many of you proudly accepting your trophies and certificates. On Wednesday, 10 children represented the school in a Tag Rugby festival where they took part in skills sessions and played matches. They won 4 matches, drew 2 and lost 1............superb!!!!!!!

We are looking forward to our trip to Bovington on Friday - a reminder that the children MUST wear school uniform but, as it is also children in need day, they can wear a spotty accessory (sensible).

A reminder that the following Thursday is our Tea Dance where the children will need to wear their evacuee costume. Bring your home learning cake/cakes in that morning and parents are invited to join us from 2:30 in the hall.

Christmas is upon us and I will be holding the singing auditions this week, it was brilliant to see so many children taking part in the acting auditions with well prepared acts!!!!!! It will be difficult to decide!

Finally, a reminder that we begin our DT project tomorrow as stated on last weeks home learning sheet and blog.

Many thanks,

Mrs. J and The Year 4 Team

Children in Need this Friday!!

This Friday (18th) we will be supporting Children in Need. The children should come in dressed in something spotty. We are asking for a 50p donation for this please.

All years - Christmas Cards - 2nd November 2016

Christmas card orders
We received communication today that the online ordering for the xmas cards has now failed completely. The company are reverting to paper orders and a pack is being sent to school. As far as we are aware any successful online orders are still valid but all others will need to complete paper order forms and bring money to school. This is not an ideal situation however POWSA are at hand to help you solve any issues and can take cash or cheques.

So, on Friday 4 th November and Monday 7 th November before and after school POWSA will be manning a table in the foyer where you can fill in the order forms and hand over cash or cheques.  We apologise for this inconvenience, however this is out of our control and are working hard to make the process successful!

Year 4 Wednesday 2nd November 2016 - various pieces of information

Well, it was lovely to see such enthusiastic, happy children return yesterday! I really enjoyed hearing all about the various holidays and trips out!

The children certainly are settled into year 4 and have returned with an excellent attitude to learning! Ofcourse, as well as working hard and continuing with outlearning, the excitement of Christmas will soon be upon us!!!!!!

I will be running auditions next week, during lunchtimes, for the Christmas play - sign up sheets are in the cloakroom.

Our Bovington tank Museum trip is soon, if there are any parents that would like to join us then please do ask! I will be sending home a home learning baking activity leading to our Tea Dance in the last week of November (Date TBC ASAP so that you can join us for tea, cake and dancing in celebration of VE Day) and you may also have heard about our DT topic - I will include information on the home learning sheet all about it and what might be required - LOOK OUT FOR THIS ON FRIDAY IN BOOK BAGS!!!!!!!

There are a couple of smaller events coming up that will only involve a small number of children, and if that is your child a letter will come home personally!

A reminder that if you wish to order any christmas cards (sorry about the delay for the label) then they need to be back in school by Friday!

Please could we ask that all Home/School agreement forms are returned ASAP and also if you were unable to attend the parent information evening then do pop in and ask for a 10 minute slot to see me!

Thank you!

Christmas cards order

Christmas card orders

Hopefully you have all received your child’s card design? You were given the information to order through the company directly on the back of the art work. The art work needs to come back to school to your child’s classroom, into their envelope - by Friday 4th November end of this week, ready to be sent off.

The company will be collecting on Monday 7th November from our school office, no set time has been given so it is vitally important the art work is back in the class envelope on Friday please.

We are hoping for the cards to be delivered back to school around 22nd November.

Year 4 Wednesday 19th October 2016

Thank you to all those of you I met during parents evening. It was lovely to finally get to meet all of you and discuss how well your child is doing!

I would like to continue with the "thank yous"............firstly to Mrs. Mistry Dyer for her fantastic afternoon last week learning all about Hindu worship - it was very vibrant and kinaesthetic! Secondly to Les, Isaac's grandad who came in and taught us many fascinating things about WW2, adding to our growing knowledge. Thirdly there have been several wonderful parents/grand parents who have volunteered to accompany us on our trips (the farm and the Nothe), without you offering to give up your time to come we would not be able to go on these trips - THANKYOU!!!!!! The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and learned A LOT!!!!!!

Finally, thank you to all of you who were able to support the book fair, I am very much looking forward to buying more books for the library and guided reading!

We look forward to seeing you at our class assembly on Friday - 9:20am in the hall!

Thank you again for all your continued support, kind words and smily faces!!!!!!

Mrs. J and the Year 4 Team

PS photos from all the above events will be added to our class pictures section on the website soon.

Bling Your Bike - Friday 21st October

“Bling Your Bike Morning”

Yes that is “Bling”, although we would like you to “Bring” your bikes too!

This Friday 21st October we will be holding another “Bling Your Bike” event. This is to promote “Being Safe by Being Seen” when out on your bikes and scooters. We are having a competition to see who can make their bike or scooter extra colourful and bright ,- so that it really stands out!

The children may score extra marks for having bright, colourful clothing that they can put on when parading their “blinged”-bike.

Children who would like to take part in the competition should bring their bikes to school on the morning of Friday 21st October. Winners will be decided during the day and we have some nice prizes, kindly donated by Sustrans

It is important that any materials added to your bike or scooter should not be in the way of moving parts.

Whole school Monday 10th October 2016

Yippee! The Book Fair arrives this week - perfect timing for some christmas shopping!!!!!!The children will all be visiting the book fair with their class, and I am sure they will come home full of excitement about books they have seen, so do pop along and buy a book or two!!!
We really appreciate the support you show us each year at the book fair, not only encouraging your child's love of reading but, every time you buy a book, we earn commission in vouchers to buy new books for the school library and the guided reading library. Great isn't it?

We rely heavily on this source to maintain a high quality, up to date library full of the latest reads and best sellers! This ensures that ALL children in the school have access to a well stocked library to explore and foster a love for books!

Thank you in advance for your support and generosity!

Mrs. Johnson

Year 4 Monday 10th October 2016 - things to remember!

Just a few reminders..........

This Friday is the farm visit - Hazel popped by and said to wear OLD clothes as they may get dirty!

Next Tuesday is our visit to The Nothe - we can't wait and I am really looking forward to seeing your costumes (don't forget your gas mask boxes - a few have already come in!) Remember packed lunches and wear a warm coat as it is often cold when we are there!

Next Friday is our first Year 4 Class Assembly - we look forward to seeing you all at 9:20!

In the cloakroom are the sign up sheets for Parents Evenings next Monday and Tuesday - Monday = early, Tuesday = late! They are only 10 minute slots, which I try very hard to keep to time with to make it fair, it is a chance for us to meet and for me to introduce myself and discuss how your child has settled in so far and for you to fill me in on anything I need to know about your child. If you have other things you would like to discuss further, then please do arrange another time with me where we can talk for longer!

Phew, so much to remember!

There have been superb, creative pieces of home learning arriving - I cannot wait to see the rest and put them on display, do come along and admire the children's work in the corridor!

Spellings as usual next week - this week we are carrying out some assessments for spelling and reading that the children cannot learn for!

See you all tomorrow!

Harvest celebrations 7th October

Thank you to everyone who took part in The Prince of Wales Harvest celebrations yesterday. The children did a great job in presenting their songs, poems and art work to parents. Also the children have been busily cooking this week using our produce from the orchard, the goodies were sold in the café during the afternoon and they all went down a storm!

The harvest art work will be up next week so do please pop by the school hall to look at your child’s work if you were unable to come along.

The local food bank received two boxes of food from the school and it is looking like a good amount of money has been raised for the Kingfisher ward, who has asked the school to purchase some electrical equipment for children’s bedrooms.
We will keep you updated.

Year 4 Tuesday 4th October 2016 - Harvest week so far!

Yesterday we learned about fishing and sustainability with relation to our harvest and farm to fork week. We also developed our painting and pastel skills in creating an under the sea inspired picture - beautiful.

Today we had some visitors from India who taught us about harvest in Silvepura, we were also lucky enough to work on a whole school art project and to learn a harvest dance performed at festivals. We shared our dance and work in a finale at the end of the day.

All of this wonderful work , and more to come this week will be on display during the harvest assembly on Friday and at the cafe in the afternoon. The cafe is open for the children from 1:30 (they may bring about 30p to have a cake and drink), you are invited to come along to the cafe from 2:30pm - you may collect your child from Year 4 to join you in the cafe - they must be signed out from the class. The Year 4 children will be helping to serve and run the cafe in turns throughout the afternoon! We look forward to seeing you on Friday!

The children kindly offered to help hand out the letters on Friday afternoon, it seems that there were several left over/behind - if you did not get all of them then please pop in and see us - the most important ones were the home school agreement - this is very important and  we are collecting the reply slips in class, also a letter form DMS about and open morning.

Tomorrow we are going to be continuing with our creative skills, composing poems and more harvest art!

See you all for swimming!

Wednesday 28th September Year 4 Class Assembly..........dates again!

Following much confusion.............for me as well, I have since discovered today that our class assembly IS STILL ON THE ORIGINAL DATE OF FRIDAY 21ST OCTOBER (just before we break for half term) as I said at the parents information morning.
I apologise once again!

Mrs. Johnson

Tuesday, 27 September 2016

Year 4 Tuesday 27th September - confusion over dates/gas mask box - please read me!

I have 2 apologies to make, firstly it seems that on the Nothe Fort letter it said the children needed to make a gas mask - it was meant to read a gas mask BOX! Washing tablet boxes or cat food boxes are ideal shapes/sizes for this.

Finally, there seems to have been some confusion over the Year 4 Class Assembly date, on the letter it said Friday 21st October and on the calendar it says Friday 4th November. I can confirm that it is FRIDAY 4TH NOVEMBER 9:20 in the school hall. I am sorry for the misunderstanding and any inconvenience this may have caused.

Look forward to seeing you all for swimming in the morning!

Sunday 25th September 2016 Literacy links for all!

If you would like some literacy based activities or ideas that you can do together with your child at home why not try this website.
Either google the National Literacy Trust and access the parents/families section or search

Have fun exploring!

Mrs. Johnson

Year 4 Sunday 25th September 2016

It was great to praise Mason, Ewan and Elsie during praise assembly for their stunning pencil portraits of Edward Elgar. I also praised Isaac for his communicative nature, sharing his historical knowledge with the class. Bruno was also praised for his mental maths work in a "beat the teacher" challenge!!!!!! Well Done!!! Ruby was also praised last week for her literacy.

We had an excellent literacy lesson, embarking on an extended piece of writing based around our WW2 drama - I look forward to reading them at the end of the week when they are finished! Everyone was engrossed and fully absorbed - you could have heard a pin drop! Fabulous working atmosphere!

In the home learning folder you will have found, along with their spellings, a maths sheet to complete and hand in in the folder, then a times tables help/practice sheet and a spellings strategy sheet - please do take these out of the folder and keep them at home with the spellings so that you can refer to them and practise. I don't need to see those, just return the maths sheet and the project, which is due in in 3 weeks!

A reminder that children will be set reading to do for home learning for the following guided reading session - please could you check that they are doing this so that they do not fall behind during the next session! Many thanks!

Fun at the South Dorset Ridgeway Project Festival of Schools

On Tuesday we had fun at the South Dorset Ridgeway Project Festival of Schools. Mr. MacBean took a selection of Year 3 and Year 4 children to represent the school and to take part in the festival held at Little Bredy. We had a chance to take part in a number of interesting workshops and find out about the fascinating heritage of our local landscape.

Year 4 Monday 19th September 2016 - this week!

I hope you all had a lovely weekend and enjoyed the sunshine yesterday!?

It was wonderful to be able to praise some children on Friday, during the praise assembly:
Tilly for her hard work and effort in numeracy as well as her World War 2 leaflet which, not only linked to history and literacy but also to ICT skills. Luke was also praised for his attitude to learning in numeracy lessons.
Other children that put in particular effort and focus to their leaflets were Harry D, Leo, Mason, Abi, Joshua, Elsie and Archie. Well done! Keep being resilient!

We are continuing with place value and number this week focusing on comparing numbers, negative numbers and x 10/100/1000 etc

In literacy we will be working on our spellings and learning different ways we can remember/practice them, learning about verbs or fronted adverbials and transporting ourselves back in time to life during the blitz through drama and film with the aim of writing our own historical stories!

LOTS of exciting things!!!!!!!!!!

Friday is "scoot to school" day!

Our display will be taking shape over the following 2 weeks, so do come along to the corridor and have a look!

See you all tomorrow - remember your PE kits!

Year 4 Tuesday 13th September 2016 - we need you year 4, please apply!

Playtime Wardens Urgently Needed!

The job of playtime warden is now available.
Job description: Help the children and teachers at playtimes, sort out fall outs, look for children who have no one to play with and find them a friend, take children in to the toilet and make sure there are no children hanging around inside,

If you think you have the qualities and skills required to do this job then please apply by writing Mrs. Johnson a letter of application by Monday 19th September.

Say why you would like the job and how you would be good at it.

Interviews will take place next week.

Year 4 Tuesday 13th September 2016 - learning and dates!

Our WW2 information leaflets are coming along nicely and very nearly, if not already, ready to print - they look fantastic and some excellent research skills have been developed!

We began French today and recapped greetings and how to ask someone how they are feeling. As well as colours, counting, classroom commands and introducing "C'est..." with a game of guess who? Tres bien!

Don't forget swimming tomorrow and I look forward to seeing those of you that can make it to the parent information session on Thursday at 9am in the hall.

The class newsletter will be out this Friday, so please look out for it in book bags! We have seen outstanding independence for Year 4 in terms of them coming into class and organising themselves for the day - some may need a little practise at the end of the day and on Fridays with letters and home learning (a lot was left behind!!!!!!) I keep a copy in class should this happen - always expect home learning on a Friday. Guided reading groups have also begun this week - each child will bring home the book they are working on and there will be an expectation, in their reading records, stating where they need to have read up to by their next session - please share these books and ensure it is being done as we then move on in the next session and they will find themselves behind if they haven't done the reading.

Year 4 class assembly is on Friday 21st October 9:20 in the school hall.

See you all tomorrow 8:40 in ICT suite or 8:50 at pool!

Mrs. J and the Year 4 Team.

Year 4 Thursday 8th September 2016 - Our Learning.

Year 4 have continued to impress us this week.................
Yesterday, we had our first swimming lesson! Everyone swam 25m or more from deep to shallow end - even jumping in!!!!!! It's going to be a fantastic year for swimming, I can tell!

We launched our WW2 topic yesterday and began learning by gathering information and carrying out research as well as a taster of what an air raid would have been like!
All children visited the library and have a new book to read along with our new reading records, which are to replace the diaries. Please could these be shared and written in by either parents or children when they have read and then come back to school everyday. This is because, you will see, there are useful pages in the middle of the book that we may use during literacy lessons.

In science today, we began our topic for this half term all about electricity. Following this lesson we began learning about the music of Edward Elgar, expressing our thoughts and feelings about the piece of music through art.

Tomorrow, the children will come home with spellings to be learned by next Friday as well as a times table that will be on their sheet. They will also come home with a new Reading Journal that we would like covered please! You can decorate the cover with pictures of your favourite things - authors, books, book covers, hobbies, animals etc. It will need to be in by the end of next week.

Our Class Charter:

We have the right to learn and have an education. We have the right to play and feel safe. We have the right to be happy and have fun. We have the right to talk and have our own opinion. We have the right to have friends. We have the right to use equipment to help us play and learn.
We have the responsibility to try our best. We have the responsibility to be kind and to play together. We have the responsibility to be sensible and focussed when we need to be. We have the responsibility to listen and respect the opinions of others. We have the responsibility to care for other people. We have the responsibility to look after equipment and use it properly.

These were discussed and decided on by the class and we have all signed the agreement. Please discuss these at home to reinforce the importance of a class charter.

See you all tomorrow!
Don't forget, next Thursday at 9:00 am is the Year 4 parents information session in the hall!

Mrs. Johnson and The Year 4 Team.
