Home Learning 1st March

Home learning – 1st March 2013
We had a great time at the Dorchester Arts Centre yesterday seeing “The Girl and the Shoes”.  I would like you to have a go at designing your own pair of magical shoes to sell in her shop.  Maybe they could give you some powers, or have useful gadgets or new technology in them.  You could draw them, or make models of them or draw diagrams with labels.  What ever you choose to do make sure you explain why your shoes are amazing!
Also this week we will be looking at the 4 and 8 times tables, try and find quick ways of remembering them…
“ I ate and ate until I was sick on the floor, 8x8 is 64!”

This week's RE

In RE this week, Year 4 started to learn about Lent (I know we are late!) I told the story of Jesus in the desert being tempted by the devil. We discussed the idea of temptation and our consciences and how cartoons often show a little devil and a little angel offering advice! Next week we will be finding out why Christians eat pancakes at the beginning of Lent.

First week of school orchestra!

Just a reminder that orchestra begins this Thursday 28th February!

Those instrumentalists I need this week are Violinists and pianists. If your child was selected by their music teacher they would have received a letter from me inviting them to attend. Children need to come to the school hall for 3.30pm, bring a snack and drink, and then we’ll rehearse. Finish time is 4.15pm; please come around the back of the hall for pick-ups. I’m looking forward to it!

 Thank you, Mrs Mewett.

Clubs this term...

Clubs have begun really well this term; the children are attending lots of fun clubs either held in lunchtimes or after school.

Dance club is popular as ever, Choir is also very strong this term; Mrs Gallego was stunned by the amazing sound she heard last week!  The beginner Recorder club has also begun now, with some very keen and eager children who are already moving on well with their learning!

If your child has recorder lessons or Ukele lessons with Lucy then please ensure your payments per lesson (£1 per week) are handed into the school office asap.

If your child would like to join any of the above then please see me or the school office and we’ll put you in touch with the adult running the club, the more the merrier!

Learning about Islam

Today Year 4 looked at Muslim artefacts, learned about the main beliefs of the Islamic faith and looked at photos of mosques in the UK and of Muslims praying. The children have also been writing to children in a school in Bolton, (St Thomas's Halliwell). Mr Farrington will be taking letters from our school to deliver to children in Years 3 and 4 next week. Here is a photo of one of the mosques where the children and families from St Thomas's worship.

Home learning 8th February 2013

This afternoon the children have taken part in a Fairtrade Clothes and Cotton Workshop.  We have found out about how clothes are produced all around the world and it made us aware about the people who make them for us.  I would like the children to look at some more labels in their clothes and mark where they came from on the world map provided with the paper copy of the home learning.  As an added extra the children could find out about Fairtrade cotton and write a paragraph about how it is produced and how clothes are manufactured from it.

Super home learning

These optimistic rainbow's have given us a positive mental attitude this week.  Great home learning!
Remember, the glass is half full!

RSPB Art Project

This week the all year 4 children have been working on a project to decorate part of a shelter that will be constructed at Radipole Nature Reserve in Weymouth. It is hoped that the decorated surface will deter vandalism. All the children have worked incredibly hard all week, drawing and painting the surface in time! It is hoped that the shelter will be built in the very near future.

Thank you very much!

Spellings 8th February

We have been so busy this Friday with the start of our "One World, One Country" week that we have not had time to check our spellings, therefore last weeks spellings will roll on and be checked next week.  A new spelling list will be issued to learn over the holidays.

Head Lice

Please be aware that we have had a case of head lice in year 4.  Please check your child's hair regularly and ensure that they are treated effectively.  This may require more than one treatment in order to kill the eggs as well as the adult lice.  Please follow the instructions on your preferred head lice treatment carefully.  Many thanks.

One World One Country and Non Uniform Day

From this Friday 8th February we will be starting the second of our themed weeks this term.  One World, One Country Week is going to be action packed with lots of activities and workshops planned looking at cultural diversity in Britain and around the World.  We will begin on Friday with a workshop on Fairtrade cotton, for this day I would like the children to come in non-school uniform.  One of the activities for this workshop will involve seeing where our clothes were made, if they contain cotton and finding out if they are Fairtrade.  We will end the day with a fashion show!

So... Friday 8th February - Non School Uniform for Year 4 only.

Home Learning 1st February 2013

Home learning – 1st February 2013
We have been looking at optimism in our rainbow time and have linked it to our assembly topics, hope and friendship.  This week I would like you to draw an optimism rainbow and write all the good things in your life onto it.  Make your rainbow as special as you can to help you think positively about your life.
As our topic in science at the moment is about light, perhaps as an extra you could write a scientific report on Rainbows and why we see them!

Football Clubs

As a safety issue can I remind all children they MUST wear shin pads when attending football clubs on Monday (after school) and Wednesday (lunchtime). Thank you.
